Ok I received this in my inbox 2 weeks ago and BOI I've wanted to share it sooo bad from my first listen but ALAS... Anyway its been on constant rotation on the 'We Plug G.O.O.D Music' radio since then and the more I listen, the more blown-away I am! We gotta shout out 'this m.et.al chic' for the hook up cos its ALOT! Right... the artiste is called Symun (as in Simon) and his sound could be described as 'adult contemporary R&B with a fusion of Neo-Soul & Hip-Hop' (what a mouthful), I'd just call it GOOD MUSIC and according to the man, his songs are predominantly about 'love' with influences such as D'Angelo, Maxwell, Eric Bennet & Sharrie Williams... let's just listen please?
What you just heard is titled 'Hey Baby' and if I may be so BOLD as to proclaim it one of the best R&B records I've come across all year... and not even that appalling rap verse (ok it's not entirely bad but it wasn't necessary in the least bit) could take the shine off the song! & the production on this record, courtesy E.Kelly = beautiful although I don't quite get the pronounced cymbal sounds at about 3.22 minutes??? Now I dunno if you'll be shocked as I was but this fella is Nigerian & Nigerian based!!! I KNOW I KNOW! I wouldn't have guessed it myself cos to be honest, he sounds WORLDWIDE baby lol! WE WANT SOME MORE! Well I dunno bout you but I know I do...
Awwww bless! This one's one of them sweet boy love songs alie? I love it though! The production is again by E.Kelly and it's got that smooth & sultry feel to it & although it kinda starts sappy (as you would a love song), I like how the chorus perks the whole song right up... and the keyboards right after the 3 minute jump? WE LOVE THAT!!! The forthcoming debut album is aptly titled 'Love, Life & Music' and I dont really have to ask you 2 look out 4 it, do I? The music sorta speaks for itself! I know I'll be gettin my copy...
You know what? It's looking more & more like I had nothing to do with finding the artistes for this right here cos I was put unto this next feature by my homegirl 'DT' a couple months ago. You must have heard of him BUT if you haven't, get to know now cos he is literally ABOUT to BLOW all over here in London. His name is 'L', yes just 'L' (as in the sweet-toothed detective in the Anime classic 'death note'???). He is half-British and half-Nigerian and the moniker 'L' apparently could also be said to mean either 'London' or 'Lagos' but yeah... we dunno what genre we'd call his music. His Facebook page calls it 'insane' while his Myspace calls it lyrical, experimental & hardcore... it's definitely different! Why don't I let you listen and we can come to a conclusion together...
That very short introduction you've just heard is called 'KING' and its produced by Bibby Jones (SO ON POINT!!!). You definitely see what I'm saying when I say it's hard to place the sound into a particular genre??? If I had to, I'd say it was alternative more than anything... Experimental? Yeah sure we could say that... G.O.O.D Music? Definitely!!! There's NO question! I'd have wished it was a bit longer but what can I say? We don't always get what we wish for lol!!! Let's get back to the music x
& now that's the full debut single from the 22 year-old Londoner/Lagosian titled 'My EX'. I like this song, it's got everything that a first single should have & that bit more! It's radio-friendly so you can see it gettin love from the mainstreams (which answers to L's 'business-man' side) & it's a really GOOD record (Bibby Jones is on production on this as well) BUT personally, I prefer 'King'. Look out for the video sometime next month and its being directed by acclaimed UK director, Luke Biggins, check out some pictures HERE.
NOW if you are a proper 9ja Hip-Hop head or shall I say if you're a proper Hip-Hop head that's Nigerian (because there's nothing like 9ja Hip-Hop in our eyes, Hip-Hop is universal!) then there's NO introducing this next feature... Its the Lyricist, the Icon, the Veteran! I was on his youtube channel a couple weeks ago and there's this mixtape on there 'Nigel Benn's Kraftwork: The Soul Edition', a collaborative work with a producer called Kraft & it's ALOT! Musically, it's just beautiful! Definite BIG-UPS to this 'Kraft' brova cos the production on this is NOT 2 be messed with! & You know we're definitely gonna get some tracks from the mixtape to feature for ya BUT we've got suthin else to hold you thru till then (so you can't say we don't take care of ya)... Enjoy!
New York Sound meets Lagos Style!!! This is called 'So Gangster' & it sample's Jay-Z's 'So Ghetto' from Life & Times Vol. 3! & it's taken from 'ModeNine Over Premo', a 19-track mixtape of Mode freestyling over a selection of D.J Premier beats. Now I know what you're thinkin... Naah he didn't OR did he? Check out my other favs after the Jump!
Remember this Preemo classic from Nas's Stillmatic? '2nd Childhood'? I hope you're lovin Mode on this as much as I am... Ohhhh Weeeee!!!
'I am NOT a star... I'm a BIGGER planet than Jupiter!' - ModeNine (2009)! Nuff said bredrin! Nuff Said!!! You should just download the mixtape HERE, enjoy it ladies & gentlemen & then come back here, let's conversate bout it!!!
Matter of fact, let's conversate about all the music on this 'We Plug G.O.O.D Music' feature... I especially wanna hear your take on Symun, I must say that 'Hey Baby' record is jus outta this world BUT yeah you tell me whatchu think... & what do you reckon bout that 'L' brova? We like him, how bout you?
Until the Next Time...
Its 'We Plug G.O.O.D Music' & Its ALOT!!!
